flash web design, banners, virals
& applications, and web 2.0 thinking
e love Flash. We love the potential for freestyle imaginative creativity that Flash offers. If you don’t know Flash, most of those adverts and banners you see all over the internet are made in Flash. All YouTube video is Flash video. In fact, chances are, if it’s online, moving, and pretty, it’s Flash. But (and there’s always a but) Flash has its downsides. Flash cannot be searched by Google, it’s still a little ropey on handheld devices, and on slower machines, Flash can be a nightmare, with long loading times. But Flash does allow a free imagination - you want your logo flickering and fading in? Or buttons that animate when you roll over? You want a dynamic photo gallery? Or a personalised online MP3 player? And of course, advertising banners to be plastered all over the internet, directing people to your site. Pig & Dog can do all this, and more.
In general we steer clear of complete Flash websites (although we’re happy to create pure Flash sites, of course, if that’s what’s called for). What we do specialise in is incorporating Flash into XHTML site structures. Our interactive galleries are mostly done in Flash, we can set up amazing Flash animated logos, as well as dynamic adverts with rich graphic and photographic content.
We code Flash in ActionScript 3.0 to an advanced level. We can design small viral games, hover-floorplans, Flash adverts and banners, design Flash MP3 players from scratch and a variety of bespoke multimedia Flash video players. We can convert any video format to Flash video and upload it, for instant, embedded, quality streaming video.
Web 2.0
What is web 2.0? Well, nothing really. Web 2.0 refers to the proclivity towards interactivity, and database-driven server-side content. And what the hell does that mean? Well, Web 1.0 covers most "information-relaying websites" - which really is all most people need. Information on a page, maybe some advanced visual elements like video & audio, but the website is essentially one-sided. Web 2.0 refers to the likes of facebook, the rise of the blogosphere, RSS feeds, and so-on, where the site content is determined and created by the users. It's fairly advanced stuff - building databases to store user-login information, creating forums for customer feedback & interaction, and so on. Pig Dog do offer full server-side site design (see our custom site package for more details), but each project is discussed on an ad hoc basis.
